HI! I'M CATHY BLACKSTONE.

I am a Columbus based photographer and welcome to my blog.

I love to photograph babies in the tummy, babies out of the tummy, kids being good, kids being bad, kids with special needs, kids with fur, couples in love, families being themselves and seniors in between text messages :)

I have a fun and carefree style that I think you will be very comfortable with. Of course I love to take the classic picture where everyone is looking at the camera with a perfect smile but what I really love to catch is the real "in between" moments. The candid moments that you will cherish forever.

This is my photo blog where I will share favorite images from recent sessions and blab about my interests and family.

Thanks for visiting my site and taking a look. I really appreciate it.

FIVE

Sniff.

My baby is five.

Five things about Dane…

(1) tries to negotiate candy all day  (2) loves loves loves clothes. especially polo shirts. ties. button downs. (3) scared to DEATH of bees  (4)  still sucks his thumb at night while rubbing his index finger on bear’s butt (5) is so stinkin funny. so funny. for example in the last minute – not kidding – he has announced he can now start saying bad words because he is five (where does he get this???), then without skipping a beat started marching around the house with his shorts pulled up past his belly button saying “I’m grandpa”! “I’m grandpa”!

We had a swimming pirate party for him. I was too hot and tired to take many pics but I did take a couple….

And then as if I didn’t have enough on my plate that day….as we were cleaning up from the party the big kids said they were going down to the creek to check it out since it just rained. Fine. This is what they looked like when they came back home because THEY NEVER EVER STOP. EVER. One word. Laundry.untitled-dane5

PICKERINGTON PROWLERS | 9 year old travel baseball team

BEST GIG EVER.

I was so so happy to be called for this job. So happy. Those of you that know me know that we give up a lot of time (happily) to travel ball. Once you get in it… there is no going back:) As a result I have learned to love taking pics of the game and the kids and all the details that surround it. This has been a WHOLE NEW WORLD for Brad and I since neither of us grew up involved in sports. Big time. Like big time, big time. At first we were eye rollers, now we are right in the thick of it. So much time and money and sacrifice are involved if your child is involved in sports – especially a sport that travels. So why not have more than the standard team picture where half the kids are in speckled sunlight and all the kids are squinting?

This is what I think sports photography should look like…

I made sure each parent received a disc with all the team shots, game shots and about 6 individual, well lit, unique and fun shots of their child.  I wanted it to be different from anything they had seen. I took the approach that if you are going to spend that much time and energy on an activity for your child – one that also holds a lot of memories for your child – then you should have some great images to back it up. Plus now that we have personally been so immersed in this world and have the team pictures of the last 8 teams my son has played on – I get it. I can’t tell you how often we look, and talk about and laugh at the pictures. Plus if it’s anything like my son – these kids will see each other and play on teams with each other for the next 9 years. I am thinking that some of these shots are going to follow them all the way to their Senior graduation party poster board:)

So once it was all said and done each disc came out to around $40 for each parent. Here are some more of the individual shots. Enjoy. Some are adorable and some are downright hysterical.

It had been awhile since I had been around the silliness of 9 year olds. I forgot how they cried if they struck out. I forgot how wiggly and touchy they were. I forgot how they squaked under the coach begging to pitch or play first base next like baby birds. I forgot how they swung at every single pitch. It was classic that one showed up without his hat and one showed up in the wrong colored jersey. It was perfect.

Here are some shots from the game.img_6471-blog

So remember me if your kid plays on a team – even it’s CHESS – and you want some shots that are a little different than what you normally get:) I had such a good time with this session. Thanks Cathy (coach’s wife and friend of mine) for calling me and thinking out of the box. You’re awesome.

OPPOSITES ATTRACT

You have no idea. The irony.

Makes me laugh every single day that our nasty mean devilish cat sleeps under our angel.

I’ll have to do a post about just her one day – she is fun to take pictures of…untitled-12

the BURKE KIDS | columbus, ohio family photographer

Sometimes sessions are so meaningful. This was one of them.  I can barely even find the words to write – I’ve started 3 or 4 times. Don’t get me wrong I love the fluffy sessions where kids are crazy laughing rolling around and mom and dad are right there with them…but what keeps me going are the birth sessions and cancer sessions and unfortunately funeral sessions and now I can add foster kid sessions. Those give me purpose and make me realize what I do is important to some people.

Therese (mom) contacted me because she wanted a session of her four biological children with their 19 month old foster child they were trying to adopt. Perfect. I already felt connected to her because she had four children:) When they showed up I had to change my game plan a little because I could tell there was going to be no rolling around and plastering each other with hugs and kisses, lol. I had some angry teenagers on my hands. Angry isn’t really the right word – but they didn’t want to be there:) I was the enemy but for some reason I was really drawn to them. REALLY drawn to them. I liked them. A lot.

Right off the bat I noticed that if I could get little David to smile everyone smiled. They adored him. So I was golden…img_9428-blog

And sometimes you don’t have to be happy and excited to get beautiful shots. This one took my breathe away – kind of took on an Abercrombie feel. I hope she knows how beautiful she is:)img_9524blog

They each had their own style. Loved their shoes and band aids…img_9582bwblog

I asked her what the key was for around her neck….”to keep my sister from stealing my jewelry”. Classic. I was so glad I asked. I guess she keeps her jewelry (that she designs) in a box with a lock on it. So of course I had to focus on it.img_9545blog

Perfect pose for two sisters that aren’t in a particularly loving phase in their relationship. I can tell though that they will be thick as thieves once someone goes to college and the other gets out of  the ever so challenging middle school. I know it.img_9771bwblog

Unfortunately about a month after the pics were taken David went back to live with relatives. Just like that. I don’t know much about the foster care system and this certainly isn’t the right place to discuss it but it can certainly be unsettling and doesn’t seem fair. But the world is a better place because of families like the Burke’s that give everything they have to give a little man a strong loving start.

I love my job.
