HI! I'M CATHY BLACKSTONE.

I am a Columbus based photographer and welcome to my blog.

I love to photograph babies in the tummy, babies out of the tummy, kids being good, kids being bad, kids with special needs, kids with fur, couples in love, families being themselves and seniors in between text messages :)

I have a fun and carefree style that I think you will be very comfortable with. Of course I love to take the classic picture where everyone is looking at the camera with a perfect smile but what I really love to catch is the real "in between" moments. The candid moments that you will cherish forever.

This is my photo blog where I will share favorite images from recent sessions and blab about my interests and family.

Thanks for visiting my site and taking a look. I really appreciate it.

THE HATFIELD FAMILY | columbus, ohio family photographer

I love my job, I love my job, I love my job:)

So Kelly calls me wanting to schedule a session with one little hiccup – it had to be that weekend. Both kids involved in soccer – practices and tournaments out the yingyang – and the tournament that they had been packed up and driving to 6 HOURS AWAY was just cancelled. Crazy.

So I fit them in a morning slot which made me nervous because it had been such a long time since I had done a morning session. When you are a photographer your entire being is thinking about what is facing west – so when you do a morning shoot and the sun is not where you are used to it being it feels left handed, lol. But I am so happy with these I can’t stand it.

img_9131-blog

It was cold. It was morning. And I’m pretty sure 3 out of 4 of them wished they were sleeping more than anything else in the world. But they were troopers and seriously cute and adorable:)

img_9041-8974

Seriously now….. can’t you just here everyone say awwwwwww during the slideshow at their weddings?

img_9214-blog

Harley. Best name ever for a girl and it fit her perfectly. She was as sweet as could be but I could tell there was a little bit of spicyness to her too:) I like that.

So. They would not touch each other. I made them try. I made them put their arms around each other but ummm no. So I made them stand back to back and it is my all time favorite sibling picture. Something I totally have to try with my numero uno and dos because they will also not touch each other.

img_8991-9019

img_9033-8874Don’t worry – I have these same pics all nice and centered too but you know I like the ones where parts of heads are chopped off better!

img_8910-8932img_8965-blogA message for Dan the Dad: thank you for jumping. I know you didn’t want to. You will probably get made fun of by men that are insecure. But tell me you love this picture. This is the shot that would be 20×24 in my house somewhere. I have stared at this for so long with the biggest smile. I could not have positioned any of you any more perfectly. Thank you thank you thank you thank you forever infinity.

img_9179-9170

img_9009-blogAnother one that is so perfect. I love where the sun is. I love how Harley is standing. LOVE the boots. I love how mom and dad are holding hands. Kelly – you look awesome. Dan – perfectly relaxed.

I’m so glad you called me Kelly:) Thank you Wendi for the referral!

THE WHYBREW FAMILY | columbus, ohio family photographer

I am so mad at my husband right now I can barely breathe. It would be REALLY nice if he would say, “hey Cath, I’m going to go through all your emails and trash some of your old ones” – but does he? NO. Can you imagine if I went into his office and trashed some of his messages and files that I felt were old without asking? Lawsy mercy.

The reason why I am so upset is because I was saving one from Paul. Out of the blue one night – it was late – I remember getting an email from Kim – but really it was Paul and he wrote the nicest things about how he enjoyed watching my photography thing grow and how he loves my blog and how he was going to bookmark it:) It was so so sweet. Men don’t do that. Paul did. And it meant a lot to me. Like I was going to print it and file it forever and now it’s gone because of my knucklehead husband.

Let me show you them and then I’ll keep talking:)

img_0612-0613

This is another family that gets me and trusts me and blabs about me. It doesn’t matter how much you advertise or set up a booth or do charity and auction stuff – if you have a mom blabbing about you then you have it made and Kim blabs:)

img_0441-0426

They also trust me. I’ve converted them. 2,3 and 4 years ago it was all about pounding out the Christmas picture. This time they wanted it all and I loved that. We even had to reschedule because it started blessed raining during our first session and I really thought Kim would be done – but much to my surprise she wanted to finish it. She wanted the whole shabang and I was smiling from ear to ear. I wouldn’t have shot these pics on top of the hill if we didn’t finish. Kim – I LOVE these. I’m so jealous. The one on the right is scrumptious. Love the way Paul looks at you.

Here come the offspring:)…..

Umm. hello. Gwynnie is just like her momma. Knows what looks good. Always put together. Whenever our girls play together Gwynnie always goes up to Ellie and finds something to compliment her on. It is so sweet and makes me realize my kids need to work on that social skill.

Here comes some cute and crayzay..

Kim. Where do I even start. We met through Susan. I always know what’s going on with Kim and I’m sure she always knows what’s going on with me – through Susan –  even though we don’t talk that much. Kim has got it going on. I always have to take a deep breathe and tell myself that I am one of God’s beautiful creatures (totally kidding) when I am around Kim. From scalp, to ear, to lipstick, to necklace, to sweater over something sassy, to fingernail, to belt, to perfect fitting jeans, to purse , to the perfect shoes she has got it put together perfectly. Yet – she’s not even the slightest bit pretentious. She has the best subtle, hilarious personality. Love me my Kim.

Can’t decide which one of these I like the best. I know Paul is a hotty piece of totty in the one on the right!

Oh and I almost forgot….Chuck and Maggie:)

THE PURCELL FAMILY | like all of them | columbus, ohio family photographer

img_6621-blogBadabing Badaboom:) 18 people looking at the camera and smiling. No one blinking. No one crying. SEVEN kids under 5 years old. Who’s your mamma? And to my photog friends – no head removals:) Did I make a complete and total fool out of myself within 5 minutes of meeting them? Yep:) Are all of the men super cute and attractive which only made singing Elmo and Old McDonald harder? Yep:) But so worth it!

Okay so this wonderful family is the Purcells. Mom and Dad are in the back and they are surrounded by their four sons and their families. I had so much fun. Total rush. It was completely organized and everyone “got” me. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that.

This is Matt and Carrie……

Kim – I felt like I knew you from somewhere. It was driving me crazy. Then finally after 2 nights of staring at you, lol, I realized you have the same eyes as Carly Simon. Has anyone told you that?

img_6971-6944

Pinky swear the next one will be big somewhere…..BIG. Big is not 8×10.

img_6983-blog

My girl Katie’s family:) Katie set the whole thing up and was organized and kind enough to totally prepare everyone for my madness. Everyone knew my style and was ready to play and kiss and roll around. KATIE ROCKS.

img_7108-blog

She has 1, 2 and 3 year old boys. She also runs half marathons. After laughing at her I start crying on the inside, lol. Umm and the next picture needs to be BIG woman! Repeat after me, ” big is not 8×10″. Thank you.

img_7123-blog

img_7036-7091

img_7030-7063I had to include the one on the right. Nice try Katie:) It brought me way too big of a smile to delete – it’s where you are right now:)

Last brother. If you think you are seeing double – you are:) This is Mark and Amanda……the one on the left made my heart skip a beat. One of my favorite couple photos ever!

img_7393-7406This is their darling little boy Landon. I could swim around in his eyes all day long.

Would you just die if you had these photos of your parents? I am so glad i didn’t pose them all stiff and traditional. So glad. I told him to get in there and he did! So cool. Thank you:)

img_7437-7441img_7446-blog

Patty and Mike. You did a fine fine job with those boys of yours. You were so nice to me and welcoming and excited. I had so much fun. Thank you. Oh and thank you for making Drew drink his milk so that he could lift the 500 pound storm metelthingamajig with one hand while holding a baby in the other – not kidding – total superhero movie scene – to fetch my keys that i dropped. I’M A GOOD SMILER, AREN’T I? | debbie’s family | columbus, ohio family photographer

Sometimes during sessions things go into slow motion on me and the most adorable things happen. I would say 10 minutes into the shoot we were walking down the sidewalk – Debbie and I were talking – and thank goodness I heard Jack say in the most darling, sweet, precious little voice, “I’m a good smiler aren’t I?”. It just stopped me. Normally I’m stopped by the moments in between kisses – or the way a husband will pull his wife into him – or the way a mother will look at her kids. But on this session it was Jack. It is what I am going to remember for years. 2 seconds after he asked it, while I was telling him he was the best ever, I lifted my camera without even looking and got the picture on the right……I love it:)

img_5998-6030

img_6115-blogDebbie (mom) is Susan’s next door neighbor that I have known for 9 ish years now. How fitting that their sessions are next to each other on the blog:) I took Jack’s baby pictures, and you probably recognize Justin (left) from his Senior pictures. Having history with a family and being involved in milestones is such a huge huge honor.

img_6040-6045

img_6150-blog

img_6079-6095Debbie. You’re beautiful. Your skin is flawless, great hair, great little figure, amazing natural smile and your face is really symmetrical too:) Betcha I’m the first to tell you that.

img_6450-6004

img_6333-blogTell me you like this picture Debbie.

Let me tell you something about Debbie…she isn’t one to sit in the grass. Not a big nature and bug lover. I brought them over to this spot and told them to sit down and it was heeelarious.  D:” Here?”   Me: “Sit”    D:”In the grass?”   Me: “Sit”    D:”Is it wet?”    Me: “Sit”    D: “Here?”   Me: “Sit”   D: “What if our pants get dirty?”   Me: “Sit”   and there you have it – I won:)  How cute is Jack resting his head on Justin’s leg? Right afterwards we passed this luscious awesome patch of long tufty grass and I told them I could get some great pics of them laying down and they were all like “PASS”!

img_6437-blog

img_6454-blogI know you are traditional Debbie. And I am down with that. But. The above picture needs to be huge in your house somewhere…….

img_6524-blogThanks again. I had a great time taking it easy with your darling sweet boys. Sometimes it is so nice not to be chasing toddlers around making a fool out of myself singing nursery rhymes:)

October 16, 2009 - 6:20 pm Caroline - ...and I want a picture of us in the long grass, too. Are you taking notes? :)

October 16, 2009 - 3:00 pm Deb Brockman - Great pics! You have some tough choices to make! Can't get over how grown up everyone is. A few favs for me: first photo of Jack, family photo with brick wall backdrop, close up of Deb and James, close up of Daniel (but I love that there is one with a smile:), Jack hugging Deb, and agree with Cathy--you need a big one of the b&w close up of the boys...precious.

October 15, 2009 - 1:57 pm Susan - Great, great pictures Cathy! My favorite is the one in the grass...fabulous!!! Everyone looks so good! Cathy, you are right...Debbie is SO pretty!! (you look awesome in these Deb, you don't give your self enough credit...you are HOT!!)

October 15, 2009 - 12:21 pm Kim Whybrew - Great pictures!! Debbie, you and your men look fantastic!

October 15, 2009 - 7:27 am Debbie - Cathy I am speechless. I love these pictures and that is hard for me to say when I am part of them. Thanks for making my day AGAIN. Can't wait to see the slideshow.
