HI! I'M CATHY BLACKSTONE.

I am a Columbus based photographer and welcome to my blog.

I love to photograph babies in the tummy, babies out of the tummy, kids being good, kids being bad, kids with special needs, kids with fur, couples in love, families being themselves and seniors in between text messages :)

I have a fun and carefree style that I think you will be very comfortable with. Of course I love to take the classic picture where everyone is looking at the camera with a perfect smile but what I really love to catch is the real "in between" moments. The candid moments that you will cherish forever.

This is my photo blog where I will share favorite images from recent sessions and blab about my interests and family.

Thanks for visiting my site and taking a look. I really appreciate it.

THE RAMMELSBERG FAMILY | columbus, ohio family photographer

Where do I even begin. So one of my best friend’s best friends had a cousin named Keri. I heard about her here and there because she is fascinating and fabulous. One night we even met her out (like 15 years ago now) at Ludlows. She leaves an impression on you because a) she’s tall and b) has the sparkliest eyes c) has the most infectious laugh.

Later on I heard she settled down, got married, BUILT A LOG CABIN WITH HER HUSBAND, and had a baby girl named Bryn. I loved that name and never forgot it. I knew I had to name my first girl Ellis (Ellie) after my maiden name but I always knew if I had another her name would be Brynn. I had another. Her name is Brynn:)

Fast forward 3ish years. We moved to Westerville. Put our kids in preschool and low and behold there is Keri. Get this… her daughter and my daughter WERE IN THE SAME CLASS. How is that for small world? Our daughters totally clicked that year. Ellie LOVED going over to Kaley’s house because it is awesome. She still talks about it to this day.

Keri and Joe’s kids are going to look back on their childhood with the fondest memories. I have never been in a home that “felt” better than theirs. It truly is a log cabin that they built. Seriously. Who does that? Tall ceilings. The coolest stone fireplace. A movie room. A dance room. A swing in the middle of the family room. The girls room has a closet that goes for days with cool little niches. Great layout. Zipline in the back. CHICKENS. Pebble driveway. On the same property as Joe’s parents WHO COOK THEM DINNER LIKE 4 NIGHTS A WEEK – WHATEVER.

So we’ve stayed connected through Facebook. I love Facebook. And she asked me to take their pictures. So much fun. Their kids are cahrazy in a good way. Like rolling around wrestling and choking and bodyslamming each other. Tons of energy that brings so much to a session. It was the first session that I made a “goofball” folder.

I talk waaaaaaay too much.

WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS | columbus, ohio family photographer

img_9038-blogTechnically not a great photo but if there was one photo that was worth a thousand words – this is it.

There is always one child in every family that brings you to your knees. I have one named Jackson.

Look at Leah. In the middle. Oldest child.  First smile after 20 minutes. She wouldn’t get out of the car. Hated her jeans. Hated having her picture taken. Worst day of her life, lol. Got out of the car. Stomped back in. Down deep I knew everything would be okay but for about 5 minutes I thought we would have to reschedule. Mom was super calm even though she told dad she was done and he was going to have to deal with it. So he calmly did. I would have loved LOVED to hear the conversation in the car. I don’t think any bribes were involved which is super impressive probably because mom has a counselor background:)

Brother worried. Little sister clueless – kindof – I’ll get back to that. This is the first photo that she looked at me and smiled. The frame before was of her pleading to get out of the situation and then all of a sudden the skies opened, the harps played, the angels sang and she looked at me with tears in her eyes and smiled:) Then she was perfectly fine because kids are on the train to crazytown half the time. I wanted to hug her. But she would have scratched my eyes out:)

img_9121-blogLove it when kids have missing teeth.

img_9150-blogJack=precious

img_9155-blogUsually the youngest gets all of my attention. I was so focused on Leah that I didn’t even notice (until I got home and downloaded) that this little jewel was all smiles and giggles the whole time.

img_9225-blogimg_9226-blogOne of my very favorite parts of every session is the 5 minutes I get with mom and dad. I love how married couples with kids look at each other. I LOVE how John is looking at Laura in the top photo. I also think it is super important to have a an image like this in your home for the little weasels to look at everyday.

img_9322-9333img_9341-9337Funny story. Another one. I left this session laughing all the way home…..top right photo I told mom and dad to look at each other and talk. By the time I got to the bottom left frame Leah said, “can I look at Jack and pretend to talk”? So cute. and then she asked him how is day was just like dad had just asked mom.

img_9203-blogSo she pretends she’s clueless with Leah’s dramathon. But she wasn’t. Kid’s aren’t. After Leah was cured Anna decided she “didn’t want to “fmile” anymore”…..until daddy brought on the tickles:)

img_9573-blogThe one that really made me laugh. John is a doctor. He had to be on a conference call towards the end of our session. During the middle of the conference call he set the phone down and jumped.

I love him.

He put it on mute. Set the phone on the stone wall. Jumped. Picked phone back up and carried on. And yes I have one with his head in it but this is the one I like.

Now for the end. Leah wanted me to watch her tap. She was so good I thought she was in tap. I asked Laura how long she had been dancing. Laura just looked at me and laughsmilesighed. Leah isn’t in dance, lol. She was just being silly. Fooled me:) But I had to get a photo of the whole package. Love the white shoes and purple socks. Hilarious. This image epitomizes picking and choosing your battles and will be hilarious blown up (at least 16×24) and her graduation party.

Her very last words to me were, “I like you but I am NEVER having my picture taken again”!

November 18, 2009 - 2:23 pm Laura - As the mom in this family, I can say this is all true, and Cathy, you were the best at handling us all. For that, I love you!!!

November 17, 2009 - 10:55 am Lisa Scherer - This made me laugh out loud. People think that being a "photographer" is easy....it is a lot of waiting and waiting for the drama to pass and being ready for when it does to catch that very small opportunity. Great job of doing just that.

November 16, 2009 - 2:48 pm Janel - I mean "some" photo critic. I can't even spell, what do I know?!

November 16, 2009 - 2:47 pm Janel - The shots of Mom and Dad are so honest. Look at me--like I'm so photo critic! ;)

THE FORD FAMILY | columbus, ohio family photographer

img_8356_1-copy

I think this is my 4th or 5th time photographing this family. Watching a family grow and change is one of the best parts about being a photographer. I love these guys. Nick and Casie play a big role in cathy blackstone becoming cathy blackstone photography. Last year after their pics Nick said to me at the bottom of the basement stairs that I really should think about getting a business card. I’m sure he doesn’t even remember this. I had thought about it but it basically scared me. It is hard to officially say that you are a photographer. But he said it so sincerely that it planted the seed. And you know once you get a business card then you have to get a better camera, blog, slideshow program, galleries, stickers, a logo ……. I hope they approve:)

img_8183-blogLuke. An easy adorable piece of preciousness. Love his sweet little face and porcelain skin.

img_8541-blogMaddie. So chatty and fabulous. She cracks me up.

img_8513-copy

Casie always has the best outfits. Plural. Always. She has an amazing sense of style. I leave there committed to looking nicer for about 5 minutes:) They are wonderful parents. I always notice Nick plays a huge role in parenting. He naturally helps with outfit changes. Most men sit on the couch and let the mom take care of it and that’s okay – Nick doesn’t. Casie is fiercely protective. She is the hen with her babies beneath her wings. They are a great team and have great kids.
