HI! I'M CATHY BLACKSTONE.

I am a Columbus based photographer and welcome to my blog.

I love to photograph babies in the tummy, babies out of the tummy, kids being good, kids being bad, kids with special needs, kids with fur, couples in love, families being themselves and seniors in between text messages :)

I have a fun and carefree style that I think you will be very comfortable with. Of course I love to take the classic picture where everyone is looking at the camera with a perfect smile but what I really love to catch is the real "in between" moments. The candid moments that you will cherish forever.

This is my photo blog where I will share favorite images from recent sessions and blab about my interests and family.

Thanks for visiting my site and taking a look. I really appreciate it.

this is how he counts down before he runs and pummels into the pool. He is crazier than Jackson ever was and louder than Brynn at this age.

Help.

MOOSE | before and after

img_4778-blogCan you hear the Aerosmith song “dude looks like a lady” playing in your head like mine? I laughed so hard when he came around the corner at the groomers. Dane kept saying (crowing) “THAT MOOSEY? THAT MOOSEY?” But I am so happy for him. He must feel so good with his Chewbacca suit removed. He is the smoothest piece of brown adorable velvet now.

THE CHERRY FAMILY | columbus, ohio family photographer

I have the best job in the world. I get to take pictures of families that are interesting, stunning, comfortable in front of the camera and that love each other. This family was no exception. Dave (dad) wins the award of the only dad EVER to start busting out the kid songs. All the moms do – I do – but Dave is the first dad and it was awesome. This dad KNEW his kids and that was refreshing. Jyothi was as calm and together as one could get. We pushed Jaisel (almost 2) as far as we could and Jyothi never once became frantic or upset as her daughter was laying face down on the ground in a heap of tears, lol. You see I have the magic ability to make people the most frantic and tense they’ve been all year but not the Cherry’s:) And it shows. I love the relationship shots I got of them and I LOVE the shots I got of the girls just looking at the camera NOT smiling.

I’ll start off with them singing the “Duke of York” and as I remember (hard not to when I’ve got proof) the Duke goes to the left and then to the right and then backwards – backwards is my favorite picture of the bunch:)

Speaking of Anikha…

img_5700-blogThis one took my breathe away. She will need to be locked up in high school.

img_5842-blogOne of my favorites of Jaisel. I was telling Jyothi how her girls names were like modern day princess names. So beautiful.

img_5920_5816The picture on the right would be huge in my house:) I have been to this park over 100 times and have never once taken a picture of a family under this arch. Sometimes things are right n front of your face – haa!

img_5773-blogI love daddy pictures in black and white. I can’t imagine having this shot of me and my dad when I was little.

img_5948-blogI love this one because Jaisel is saying “I’m sorry Mommy” because she was being a stinker. I love the look on Jyothi’s face. It speaks volumes. She thinks Jaisel is cute and darling and funny but not quite ready to forgive her for the previous half hour of shortcomings, lol.

img_5832-5866Jyothi’s parents and brother and his girlfriend were there too. They kept losing each other and finding each other through cell phone. Very funny.

img_6050-6019-blogLove these.

Thank you Dave and Jyothi! I’ll be in touch soon.

April 2, 2014 - 8:46 am Rohit chandran - Hey Cathy, brilliant photography. I love the natural setting the pictures are clicked in. The funny part is that i was looking for baby anikha's photos who's a child actress in the Indian movie industry. So yeah, i love all photos that you've clicked..

BRYNN and DANE | therapy pictures

How can I possibly get so mad and frustrated and defeated by these two during the day?

I’m using my blog as therapy tonight. I’ve just spent the last hour organizing photos (total and complete nightmare) and came across the most darling pictures of them. They are so bad. They wear me out to the bone. To the core. I can feel the myelin sheath shedding from my nerves as the day goes by.

Today they were fighting over headphones in the car. Dane screaming and crying and kicking the back of my seat in a car in traffic on the way to the umpteenth baseball game is not pretty. They feed off each other like sharks. They take bites, scream, take more bites, scream, cry, tattle – both so emotional. I am not emotional so it is so hard for me. By the middle of the day I become a shark myself and join right in – the rational, positive reinforcement patient language goes right out the door:(

Brynn is just a bundle of emotion and drama and whine and sparkle. Dane is a crow. Imagine a crow cackling loudly in your house. He crows, “MOM” “MOM” “MOM” at the top of his lungs all day. Seriously. On the volume scale he is at crow level.

So we had a moment at the park today. We were walking toward a purple tree and I said “that tree looks purple” and Brynn said “prickly”? and I said, “no, I said purple” and she said “prickly”? and I said “no I said purple” and she said, “I can’t understand you, prickly”? and in the meanest most impatient raised voice I said “PURPLE”! and she waited a few seconds and said in the sweetest voice (as she slipped her hand into mine) “it hurts my feelings when you talk that way”. Shoot.me.now. It was just one of those once a month moments that make you feel like you are doing everything wrong.

So here are some pics I need to reference in my archives every time I am about to come unraveled.

img_8804-blogLook at them. They are so so cute. Look at her freckles. it just dawned on me that he will get freckles. They are so similar. Their golden hazel sometimes blue eyes. Their soft porcelain skin. And how about that hair!

img_3883-blogNext time he pours my Diet Coke into the pool I’m going to laugh. Next time I have to lunge over the back seat of the car with my butt flying into the air (a sight to be seen I’m sure) to grab him because he is giggling and hiding from me I will take a deep cleansing breathe.

img_9411-blogThe next time I sit in her glass of ice water wedged into the cushions of the couch I will remember her singing ABBA with a pretend microphone on the side of the trampoline like it was her stage. It was so so so fun to watch her while I was doing dishes.

img_4607-blogAnd the next time this little boogie shoots water into my van from the hose (how fitting is this picture?) I will blame myself for not shutting all the doors.

Therapy session over:) Thanks for listening.

And by the way all of the naughty deeds referenced in this post happened TODAY – the Coke, the ice water, the water in the van …..

July 23, 2009 - 10:34 am bentley - omg, my thoughts exactly. i hate that i loose patience for my 2.5 year old. i need to be able to laugh things off more often. that's my new goal, unless someone is bleeding or it REALLY makes a difference in our lives i will laugh, instead of scream.

June 30, 2009 - 7:03 pm Grandma Ellis - Absolutely love the pictures. I wish we lived closer but the wonderful pictures fill the emotional void from being so far away. Movie stars, all of them! Love ya, Mom

June 25, 2009 - 8:23 am Jennifer S. - Ohhh, I am so glad to hear other mom's have those days too. I feel so quilty when I loose my cool, it's like I forget that they are just kids, not little adults. Thanks so much for sharing! And they are absolutely positively breathtaking kids.

June 25, 2009 - 12:46 am Eveline van Heijst - Oh and silly me, your pictures are amazing. Eveline.

June 25, 2009 - 12:45 am Eveline van Heijst - Thanks for this post. It made me laugh and I badly needed a laugh. Eveline.

June 24, 2009 - 11:03 pm Cathy - Thanks everyone. Your comments are so appreciated. That was a ROUGH day. I'm better:) but I'm thinking you can check back in another 30 days for some more therapy photos:)

June 24, 2009 - 10:18 am Cam - Wow, such a treat to hear that other people have these days too!!!! I loved your therapy session so much. Thank you so much for sharing your stories, they truly were wonderful.

June 24, 2009 - 10:10 am Staci - I am SO glad I saw this link on Jennifer McGuire's blog! You had me chuckling the entire time (I can relate-I have 5 kids). The Diet Coke thing would have been the end of my mommy sanity. I treasure each drop of my diet coke! Your photos are incredible! If you're ever in Alaska, sign me up for a session!

June 23, 2009 - 9:36 pm Karen Nuce - Love your comment about the mylen sheath shedding from your nerves! I can relate to every comment you made and my kids are older (10 & 12!). So glad I saw your link on Jennifer McGuire's site...this made my day!

June 22, 2009 - 10:50 pm apryl - oh cathy, i am totally right there with ya! love the photos, the golden light in the balloon shot, the "boy" shot with the hose, the 2 together... ah, motherhood! sometimes ya gotta laugh or you'll cry!

June 22, 2009 - 5:52 pm Lisa McClain - Cathy - Brynn and Dane pictures are priceless! Brynn cracks me up. I think she is 6 going on 16.

June 22, 2009 - 9:58 am Rachel - I can SO relate to this post. so relate. Love those pics though, you and Brad sure make beautiful kiddos!

June 21, 2009 - 5:04 pm Kirsten - Thanks for the perspective - I totally get the crowing "MOM" thing...and that's my oldest, who is 18!!! Wow that hose shot is amazing -

June 21, 2009 - 4:48 am Tina - Tears in my eyes reading this, Cathy. Especially the story of Brynn. Your children are all completely different, unique and awesome. (Brynn could actually be MY daughter - a lot of similarities there!) It will be over too soon - just in time for the older two to become teenagers! :) All those things in one day would have made me lose it, too. You are a great Mom and your pictures ROCK!

June 20, 2009 - 2:43 pm Jana - Wonderful photos and such an honest post. I'm not a mom but felt my blood pressure rise just hearing your description of those days. And then felt my heart melt looking at your beautiful children. Imperfect or not (we all are) they are very lucky to have you as their Mom.

June 20, 2009 - 12:41 pm margie - mmm....when I start to come unraveled, I am coming right back to this beautiful post. We hear you, Cathy. It is summer. We, your readers, can relate. Except I don't have adorable red headed boy in a bubbly tub photos or how about the golden little girl holding those balloons in that gorgeous field, I can't relate to that one either. Those are your shots, and they are lovely!

June 20, 2009 - 12:27 pm Jill - I can totally relate to some of your feelings. It is rough being a mommy sometimes! It is so refreshing though to see that I'm not the only one that looses my cool around the little ones. Your photos are darling!! Praying that you have a moment of silence this weekend!

June 20, 2009 - 12:24 pm Jen - You're not alone. We all have those moments, right? And as a side note, your photographs are gorgeous (as well as your kids =)!

June 20, 2009 - 12:10 pm jennifer mcguire - amazing photos. simply amazing. that first one made me melt. i can relate. you aren't the only one. hugs hugs hugs!

June 20, 2009 - 8:46 am Beth - Mom always said there would be pay-backs for all of Brad's child/teenage antics. Unfortunately, I think you are on the receiving end of all of it. They are just so darn cute!
